When I saw some of Tyre Nichols' sunset photos, I saw a photographer with an innate "eye," whose life was beaten out of him just as his talent was beginning to build. I didn't know this young man, but I felt a sort of kinship with him based solely on a shared love of photographing sunsets. It's a photographer thing. Seeing the world through the photographer's eye transcends race, religion, residence and age. I make it a point to photograph the sunset or sunrise at least once almost every new place I go.
As I thought about this, I remembered a passage from one of my favorite young adult novels: The Outsiders, by S.E. Hinton. Sunsets (and sunrises) in that novel represent our common humanity. For all of our differences, we all live under the same sun. And whatever group we may belong to, many of us watch the sunset, and are moved by it.

As Ponyboy Curtis states: "i pictured that, or tried to. Maybe Cherry stood still and watched the sun set while she was supposed to be taking the garbage out. Stood there and watched and forgot everything else until her big brother screamed at her to hurry up. I shook my head. It seemed funny to me that the sunset she saw from her patio and, the one I saw from the back steps was the same one. Maybe the two different worlds we lived in weren't so different. We saw the same sunset." (THE OUTSIDERS, Ch. 2, p. 35).
This album is to honor a budding photographer who never got the chance to develop his talent, and who was robbed far too early of the chance to photograph more sunsets.
